Here's the ingredient list for the sugar cookie recipe that I grew up with (we used cookie cutters with it, including the 3-D ones you'd see in the 1980's):
Bake 8 to 9 minutes on an upper part of the oven at 375° F. It talks of chilling the dough, optionally painting with milk and sprinkling sugar, and such, but I don't know that we did any of that (or even used the top part of the oven). I didn't make this recipe a lot, though; other family members did, mostly.
