Not to be confused with bilberries, which actually are huckleberries, while garden huckleberries are arguably not. I say 'arguably' because the name huckleberry refers to multiple species of plants anyway. It's not a scientific name. However, as someone who grew up eating bilberries on camping trips as a teenager (calling them huckleberries), and has never tasted garden huckleberries, I must say that from the reports I've read, bilberries probably taste a lot better in their raw and unprepared form (and sweeter); so, calling them both huckleberries can be misleading, and cause people to think huckleberries aren't that great without proper cooking and sugar when in fact they are pretty good fresh.
