So, occasionally, we have some house flies in our house (like if someone leaves the door open in the summer or fall).
I've recognized that sometimes flies buzz around my face, the crown of my head, the back of my head/neck and such like they have a really vested interest in getting my attention. One thought I first had was that maybe flies were territorial, like dogs, since they only did it in certain places. However, I've since learned otherwise. It seems now that the flies only really bother me when there are loud sounds, like running water or that of an air conditioner running.
Reliably, it seems if I turn on the sink, the flies buzz around my head. If I just do stuff in the kitchen without the sink on, the flies are friendly. They seem to be bothered by our air conditioner, too.
I guess maybe flies don't like noise. What is interesting to me, though, is that they don't just go somewhere quieter. They stand their ground. Maybe those sounds mean something to them. Maybe they think it sounds like lots of flies buzzing, and it gets them excited.
On another note, I've discovered that flies like to fly when the light is on (at night). If you turn it off, they usually go quiet after a while. If they're buzzing around your room, you can turn the light off, open the door, and turn a bright light on outside your room that will attract them. You should probably ensure that the flies are still flying when you do this. If they've landed, the pull of the light might not be sufficient to rouse them to leave the room.

Flies have proven to behave differently at times, but it happened often enough that I think there's something to learn here.
