I went to went to Deseret Industries with a relative. Anyway, I went inside and looked at what they had. I found a new-looking Whirley-Pop popcorn popper for $4. While I was examining it, a very amiable woman noticed and talked about how great they were to me. So, we got it. We left, went through the McDonald's drive-through (I got a Big Mac, a Quarter Pounder, a vanilla icecream cone and six ketchup packets, all of which I used; the total, sans tax, came to $5.75) and went home.
I washed the Whirley-Pop a little later and put it to work. It's basically a nice metal pot with vents in its lock-on lid, and a crank to move the kernels around. You use the stovetop to use it (it's not electric). The lid is kind of sharp (so, be careful when handling it).
I read the instructions carefully and decided to use three tablespoons of extra virgin [HASH]olive oil, a half a cup of popcorn, and I wasn't sure what counted as medium-high on our stove, so I settled with 8. I did not pre-heat the burner. I started cranking as soon as I turned the heat on. It started getting hot. Pretty soon, I heard some popping sounds, and boom, the pot was full of popcorn, and the thing wouldn't turn anymore (you're not supposed to force it). You're not supposed to season the popcorn until after you take it out of the Whirley-Pop, nor are you supposed to use butter in the Whirley-Pop.
I was surprised at just how fast it turned into popcorn. I mean other methods take at at least thirty seconds or probably more after it starts making popping sounds. This was extremely fast. And, true to the advertising, it popped almost all of the kernels! I think there were maybe five unpopped or partially popped ones.
I seasoned it with Tajin seasoning, and it was awesome! Excellent popcorn. I can see myself using this regularly (maybe several times a week).
I want one of these designed for [HASH]wheat and other such! Maybe someone invented one.
It's a great way to get a lot of popcorn fast.
This is the best way to make popcorn I've tried! I've also tried air-poppers and a microwave popper (and the regular microwave popcorn that comes pre-buttered and stuff). Maybe I've tried it on the stovetop with a regular pot before, but I'm unsure.
