So, today, I tasted fennel foliage for the first time (unless I nibbled on our plant last year a bit; I don't remember). I think it was this kind, as I got the fennel seeds from seedsnow.com: www.seedsnow.com/products/fennelFirst, I tasted some from the plant outside. Then, I tasted some from some fresh fennel purchased from Winco (someone gifted it to me, since I had never tasted it). The kind from the garden had a stronger licorice punch to it. The leaves taste kind of like salad greens, with a temporary licorice punch. I like them. It's hard to describe the grocery store kind. I preferred the garden kind as it was fresher and tastier, but they were both good. I think fennel greens would be great in salads. Both types I tasted are bulbing types (but this post is about the taste of the tips of the foliage). [HASH]flavor [HASH]greens

I baked the Winco fennel with avodado oil. I was going to put mozarella cheese on top, but it had lots of scary down brown mold on it that looked like moss. (We had only had the cheese a day or so.) So, I just ate it like that. I fried the foliage (with some of the aforementioned cheese; I didn't notice the mossy-looking mold, as it wasn't on the first couple slices), and ate it. It was better with the cheese. Don't read the following section if you're eating. Anyway, the fennel pretty much went right through me (I could see fennel leaves in the toilet about an hour later). I had diarrhea, but I didn't feel particularly sick. I don't know if it's because I ate too much of it or if it was the cheese from the moldy block that I ate. However, it should be noted that a diarrhea-type does seem to be going around.
