We went to set up some trellises, today, and came up with an easy way to do it:
Get two hog wire panels and lean them together at the top (so it forms a three-dimensional triangular trellis, like a tent-shape). Tie them together at the top with bailing twine. Tie lengths of twine between both ends lower down, too (so the trellis can't collapse); the twine makes sure they can't go wider than that (and the tent shape ensures that they shouldn't go narrower). Put some cardboard or wood under the sharp parts of the panels if there are any. It works, so far.
I like that this is a portable trellis method.
We used the odd panel to lean against a fence for the Huerfano Bliss honeydew melon (using rocks to keep it in place).
An idea that came to me afterward is to get two (or more) wooden stakes. Put them in the ground. Have nails hammered into the sides of the stakes. Tie twine between the nails of both stakes to form the trellis bars. If you don't use nails, the twine around the stakes will probably slip. Alternatively, you could just attach lengths of wood to form the trellis bars.
