I found a story that claims to have the reason that vanilla is getting so expensive. It's not that it won't grow elsewhere, but apparently it has to do with pollination difficulties and the desire for cheap manual labor (in pollinating). Maybe they should work on introducing those pollinators that do pollinate vanilla to the regions where they grow them.
